When you chew your cud in unison with your sisters! Why are they chewing? ⬇️. Sheep chew cud to improve fiber digestion. By rechewing regurgitated forage, they enhance microbial fermentation and extract more nutrients from every bite.

This Ram is Maximum Points. What does it actually mean?

In the Swiss Valais Blacknose system, animals are evaluated on three core traits:
Type. Foundation. Wool

A “maximum points” animal achieves a perfect score within its age class:
4/4/4 for lambs
5/5/5 for yearlings
6/6/6 for adults

This designation reflects how closely an animal aligns with the Swiss breed standard at that moment in time.

In Switzerland, this structured grading system has guided selection for generations, balancing beauty with functionality.

SCM Mattijs is at Vineyard Valais… a living example of presence, structure, and breed character, with a Maximum Points designation.

Follow along as we learn from the source and bring Swiss standards to California wine country.
